It’s registration time again. All three vehicles. Within two days of each other.
That’s for the VW. To which we add $306 for compulsory 3rd party injury insurance and a $40 inspection fee.
The Forester is $384 registration. The CTP was $336 and another $40 for the inspection.
The Nissan Patrol farm ute is $743 (fucken- ouch).... another $306 for CTP and the $40 inspection.
So that’s $878 + $760 + $1089 = $2,727 just to keep three cars legally on the road for one year.
[sigh]

Growing up in PA, I had no idea that other states had a motor vehicle tax. When I moved to NC in my twenties, I was like "what the hell is this? You want me to pay you annually based on how nice my car is?" PA might have it's own issues, but at least everyone pays the same for inspection, emissions, and registration every year.

That isn’t a terrible amount. It does suck that it is all at once.

You haven’t owned a truck yet , have you?

Move to the ACT. I had both cars and the bike hit at the same time so I put 3, 6 and 12 months on them respectively. Now they come at different times of year and nowhere near Xmas.

Not likely to move. And we could offset it all even here but holy moly it's a big spend after a decade or so in Victoria.

I meant for passenger cars. It doesn't matter if you drive a 20 year old Civic or a new BMW. Same registration.

Registration here in Massachusetts is $6 0 for two years . In addition I pay an annual town tax of around $75 (not sure if this is based on the value of the car or not). There’s a required annual inspection that costs around $35 I think. There are minimum insurance requirements, but I don’t know what they cost, since they are too low to be a sensible purchase.

My point was that in NC, you would have to pay an annual registration, inspection, emissions, plus a vehicle tax based on how nice your car is. When we moved there, the tax on a 7 year old Honda Civic coupe was like $350 a year just in tax.

People often refer to how expensive it is to own a car in Japan but all cumulated, I pay less than you do for my cars... All combined the Rx7 cost me 700$ a year. The Delta will be 750$ a year or so... Then there’s the extra insurance (legal minimum is included with registration... So I pay extra solely because I want my cars to be very well covered ) about 80-90$ a month for full coverage for both cars. So 1000$ a year or so for the insurance.... Fully insured and road legal, my two cars cost me less than 2500$ a year. And I’ll have a third one in a bit just for a few months...

I actually looked at your costs and you’d be paying another $ 300 or so ontop for rego+CTP in the ACT.
The only upside is no yearly inspections

Comprehensive insurance or third party property insurance for our cars is extra...

yeah nsw sucks for costs to own a vehicle.
I pay (including comprehensive/reg o/ctp )... 23 00 for the Bimmer + 16 00 for the Honda...
man I wish I hadn’t added that up. that’s $ 3,9 00/year for my 2 cars + my wife’s Mazda .

Where is that? In Florida, U.S.A. you have to pay a few hundred bucks the first year when you get a new car, on top of sales tax , but after that it’s only about $35 per year per car, pl us insurance of course.

Yeah my parents moved to NC back in 2005, and the annual tax on vehicles has discouraged them from purchasing anything new since they got their 2006
Camry.

I think that these days they’ve combined the registration and vehicle so that they pay both at the same time. When I moved there in 2012, you’d pay registration, inspection, emissions, and then like 3 months later the tax bill shows up.
If the tax is like 350 on an old Civic I'd hate to see the tax on a new car.

Yeah, it’s not required here, but you want extra insurance, even if your car isn’t fully covered... I chose to have my cars covered, but just making sure all situations are covered but my cars themselves aren't , I would be paying an extra 12-13$ a month instead of the 80-90$ a month I’m paying now...

Paying tax on a car AFTER you buy it? Socialists!

Indeed. The only joy was 'saving' $220 by not going with our previous CTP supplier...
